Is It Moral to Raise Money During the COVID-19 Crisis?

The coronavirus pandemic is currently affecting millions worldwide, and there seems to be no end in sight. The virus has spread from country to country, touching the lives of those both young and old. No one is immune, and it seems neither is the economy.

While many people are fighting for their lives in hospitals, others are fighting to stay afloat financially. With this in mind, it begs the question: Is it moral to raise money during the COVID-19 crisis? Let’s take a closer look and find out.

Instrumental or Insensitive?

Right now, everyone is going through trying times. We all are stuck inside, practicing social distancing to do our part and lower the curve. This means that more and more people have taken to social media in an attempt to express themselves and connect with those around them.

As a result of this, we’ve noticed that many people have begun to frown on people discussing money online. People have come under fire for discussing their financial situations.

Others have been attacked for trying to raise money for other causes during the coronavirus. The money that needs to be raised may be instrumental to their organization, but it seems that in light of recent events, people have become much less receptive. What can be done?

Keep It Respectful

If you need to raise money for your non-profit organization at this time, be mindful of the circumstances. People are more sensitive about money, so watch your phrasing and keep your requests respectful.

Possible donors may surprise you with how they will react to a polite request. People still want to help their neighbors and their community, but they may not know how or where to go. A gentle nudge in the right direction may be key to getting the funds you need.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

We know that these are difficult times all around, but many still want to raise money to help those in need. People may not be aware of a certain need or organization in their neighborhood. So help to make them aware.

During a time like this it would not be smart to go door to door, but get creative! Have places for people to donate online. If you have a website, put your donation link in an obvious area for all to see when they visit. While you need to be tactful, you also need to be bold.

Be Thankful

Most importantly, be thankful. People will feel a lot better about where their money has gone if they know it’s towards a cause that truly appreciates their generosity, In a time where people are hunkering down, a simple thank you can go a long way.

Try asking for the email address of those who visit your website or who donate. You can send them a thank you note for visiting and for their donation. It will help to put them at ease.

While everyone may feel differently about raising money during the COVID-19 crisis, one thing will remain the same. Raising this money will continue to help real people, and that is certainly moral in our book.
